Instant Heart Rate

Instant Heart Rate by Azumio was rated the best health and fitness app on Mobile Premier Awards in 2011. All you have to do to use this app is place your finger over the camera lens, and let your phone calculate your heart rate. It works by using the LED camera light to recognize color changes in your finger as capillaries expand and contract during your heartbeats.  Cool, right?

The free version of this app only allows you to store 5 measurements, and by upgrading to the pro version ($1.99), you will also be rid of advertisements and be able to see your progress chart. For those who have cardiac concerns, it may be worth splurging for the real deal to keep track of your heart rate while exercising, but for myself, the free version is all that is necessary.

To get the best results, make sure to enter your age and gender and keep your finger completely over the lens for at least 10 seconds. The downsides to relying on this app are that it may be difficult to use mid run or cardio session, so you might have to slow down to get your results. It also is very basic, so if you’re looking for a continuous monitor. Instant Heart Rate App may not be the right fit for you unless you want to be taking your heart rate every couple minutes. Overall, this is an innovative app that can be useful for a quick heart rate check, but I wouldn’t rely on it completely for a thorough analysis of your heart functioning if you are at risk.
